7 Brake Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
Your brakes are the single most important safety system in your car. Unlike a noisy AC or a dim headlight, a brake problem is something you should never put off. The good news is that brakes almost always warn you before they fail — if you know what to listen and feel for.
1. Squealing or squeaking when you brake
A high-pitched squeal is often the built-in wear indicator on your brake pads telling you they’re getting thin. Catch it here and you usually just need pads.
2. Grinding
Grinding is more serious than squealing — it often means the pads are worn right down and metal is contacting metal, which can damage your discs. Don’t keep driving on grinding brakes.
3. A soft or spongy pedal
If the pedal sinks further than usual or feels soft, you may have air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a fluid leak. This directly affects your stopping power.
4. Vibration when you brake
A pulsing or shuddering through the pedal when you slow down usually points to warped discs. It’s uncomfortable — and it lengthens your stopping distance.
5. The car pulls to one side
If braking tugs the steering left or right, one side of your brakes may be wearing unevenly or a caliper may be sticking.
6. Longer stopping distances
If it simply takes more road to stop than it used to, something in the system has worn. Trust your instinct here.
7. The ABS or brake warning light
A dashboard brake light is never something to ignore — get it read as soon as you can.
When in doubt, get it checked
