Car Tyre Expiry Date: How to Check It

A tyre can have plenty of tread left and still be unsafe. Rubber ages and hardens over time, regardless of how many kilometres it’s covered, which is why knowing how to check car tyre expiry date matters just as much as checking tread depth — especially in the UAE’s heat, which speeds up that ageing process.

Where to find the date

Every tyre has a DOT (Department of Transportation) code moulded into the sidewall. Near the end of this code is a four-digit number — that’s the manufacturing date. The first two digits are the week of the year, and the last two are the year itself.

For example, a code ending in “2321” means the tyre was manufactured in week 23 of 2021. It’s a small, sometimes hard-to-spot stamp, so you may need to look closely or check the inner sidewall if the outer one is worn or dirty.

How old is too old

Most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after five to six years from the manufacturing date, regardless of tread depth, and advise against using any tyre older than ten years under any circumstances. In UAE heat, many independent workshops recommend leaning toward the shorter end of that range, since high temperatures accelerate the rubber’s natural ageing process.

Why age matters even with good tread

As rubber ages, it loses flexibility and becomes more prone to cracking, especially in the sidewalls. This weakens the tyre’s structure and increases the risk of a blowout, particularly at highway speeds in hot weather — even if the tread pattern still looks nearly new.

Check spare tyres too

Spare tyres are often forgotten because they’re rarely used, but they age just like the tyres on the road. A spare that’s sat in the boot for eight years isn’t a reliable backup in an emergency, even if it’s never seen a pothole.

Buying “new” tyres — check the date anyway

Even brand-new tyres can sit in a warehouse for a year or two before being sold. When buying replacements, it’s worth checking the manufacturing date on new stock too, so you’re not paying full price for tyres that already have significant age on them.
