Common Car Warning Lights and What They Mean

Modern dashboards use dozens of small icons to communicate everything from low fuel to a serious mechanical fault, and it’s easy to lose track of what each one means. Knowing which lights demand immediate action and which can wait for a scheduled visit makes a real difference. A basic car scanner and a bit of knowledge go a long way toward driving with confidence instead of anxiety.

Red lights: stop and check immediately

Red warning lights generally mean something urgent enough to address before continuing to drive.

• Oil pressure warning (oil can symbol): low oil pressure can cause serious engine damage within minutes. Stop safely and check oil level before continuing.
• Engine temperature warning: an overheating engine needs to be stopped immediately. Continuing to drive risks warping the cylinder head or worse, especially relevant in Sharjah’s summer heat.
• Battery/charging warning: indicates the charging system isn’t working properly. The car may run briefly on battery power alone before stalling.
• Brake warning light: can indicate low brake fluid, worn pads, or the handbrake being engaged. Treat as urgent unless it’s clearly just the handbrake.

Amber/yellow lights: get checked soon

These typically don’t require stopping immediately but shouldn’t be ignored for long.

• Check engine light: covers a huge range of possible faults; get it scanned to know what it actually means.
• TPMS (tyre pressure) warning: one or more tyres are significantly under-inflated. Check pressure as soon as practical.
• ABS warning light: the anti-lock braking system has a fault. Regular brakes usually still work, but ABS won’t assist during hard braking.
• Traction control / ESP light: either flashing briefly during genuine loss of traction (normal) or staying on, which suggests a system fault worth checking.

Other common symbols

• Washer fluid low: simply top up the reservoir.
• Coolant level low: top up when the engine is cool and check for leaks if it keeps dropping.
• Airbag warning light: indicates a fault in the airbag system. It won’t affect drivability but should be checked, since it means the airbags may not deploy correctly in an accident.
• Glow plug light (diesel vehicles): normal briefly on startup in cold conditions; a fault if it stays on or flashes while driving.

The general rule

Red generally means stop and assess before continuing; amber generally means schedule a check soon. When more than one light appears at once, or a light appears alongside unusual noises, smells, or handling changes, treat it more seriously regardless of colour.
