Hydraulic pressure controls everything

Transmission fluid does more than lubricate. It’s pressurised and directed through a network of passages to apply the clutch packs and bands at exactly the right moment. This is why fluid condition matters so much — if pressure drops because the fluid is low or degraded, gear changes become delayed, rough, or start slipping.

The computer decides when to shift

Modern automatics use a transmission control module that constantly reads inputs like engine speed, throttle position, and vehicle speed to decide the ideal moment to shift. This is why a car can shift earlier when driven gently and hold gears longer under hard acceleration — it’s adapting to how you’re driving in real time.
