How Many Litres of Engine Oil Does Your Car Need?

“How many liters engine oil does my car take?” is one of the most common questions we hear, and there’s no single answer — it depends entirely on your engine. Get it wrong and you risk underfilling, which starves the engine, or overfilling, which can cause foaming and pressure problems. Here’s how to find the right figure for your car.

It comes down to engine size

As a rough guide:

  • Small 1.0-1.6L engines (compact hatchbacks and sedans) typically take around 3.0-4.0 litres
  • Mid-size 1.8-2.5L engines (family sedans and crossovers) usually need 4.0-5.5 litres
  • Larger V6 engines (3.0-3.5L) often take 5.5-6.5 litres
  • V8 engines in SUVs and pickups can need 6.5-8.5 litres or more

These are general ranges, not exact figures — the only reliable number is the one specified for your exact engine.

Where to find your car’s exact figure

  1. Owner’s manual — this lists the precise oil capacity for your specific engine variant, usually under “Specifications” or “Maintenance.”
  2. Dipstick markings — while this won’t give litres directly, the gap between MIN and MAX is usually around 1-1.5 litres, useful for topping up.
  3. Online VIN lookup or dealer parts catalogue — handy if the manual has gone missing, since capacity can vary between engine options on the same model.
  4. Ask your mechanic — we keep manufacturer specs on file for the makes and models we service regularly, so a quick call or message gets you an exact answer.

Why “close enough” isn’t good enough

Filling to the wrong level causes real problems either way:

  • Too little oil means insufficient lubrication and cooling, leading to accelerated wear and, in serious cases, engine damage — a particular risk in UAE heat where oil is already under more thermal stress.
  • Too much oil can cause the crankshaft to churn air into it, creating foam that doesn’t lubricate properly, and can also raise internal pressure enough to damage seals.

A note on oil filter capacity

Don’t forget the filter holds a small amount of oil too — usually 0.2-0.3 litres. Most quoted capacities already account for this, but it’s why “oil plus filter change” volumes are always slightly higher than an oil-only top-up.
