How Often Should You Change Your Engine Oil in the UAE Heat?
Ask ten drivers how often to change their engine oil and you’ll get ten answers. The truth is that the “every 10,000 km” advice printed for mild climates doesn’t fully apply here. In the UAE, heat and dust make your oil work harder — so the honest answer for most cars in Sharjah is: more often than the manual suggests.
Why the heat matters
Engine oil does three jobs: it lubricates, it cools, and it carries away dirt. High ambient temperatures thin the oil and break it down faster, while fine desert dust finds its way past filters over time. Oil that’s past its best stops protecting the engine — and that’s when wear starts.
A simple guideline
- Conventional oil: every 5,000 km, or every 3–4 months.
- Synthetic oil: every 8,000–10,000 km, or every 6 months.
- Lots of short trips or heavy traffic: change at the shorter end of the range — the engine rarely reaches its ideal temperature, which is harder on the oil.
If your car sits in the sun and crawls through Muwaileh traffic every day, treat it as “severe service” and lean towards the shorter interval.
Signs your oil is overdue
- The oil-change or service light is on
- The engine sounds louder or rougher than usual
- Oil on the dipstick is very dark and gritty rather than amber
- You can’t remember your last change
It’s the cheapest insurance you can buy
A full oil and filter change is one of the least expensive things you’ll ever do for your car — and skipping it is one of the most expensive. Sludge build-up, poor performance and premature engine wear all trace back to tired oil.
