How Often Should You Change Transmission Fluid?
Engine oil gets all the attention, but transmission fluid quietly does just as much work — and in Sharjah’s heat and stop-start traffic, it wears out faster than most owners expect. So how often should you change transmission fluid if you actually want your gearbox to last? Here’s the honest answer.
What the manual says vs. what UAE driving demands
Manufacturer intervals for transmission fluid typically range from 60,000 to 100,000 km, and some newer “lifetime fluid” gearboxes claim no changes are needed at all. Those figures are usually based on moderate climates and normal driving.
UAE conditions are anything but normal for a transmission. Constant heat, heavy traffic, and frequent short trips all push fluid temperatures higher and break it down faster. For most vehicles here, a more realistic interval is every 40,000 to 60,000 km, or every two to three years — whichever comes first.
Why heat is the real enemy
Transmission fluid loses its lubricating and cooling properties as it breaks down from heat exposure. Every 10°C above normal operating temperature roughly halves the fluid’s useful life, according to widely cited industry figures. In a country where cabin and under-bonnet temperatures regularly climb well past what’s considered normal elsewhere, that effect adds up fast.
”Lifetime fluid” is rarely truly lifetime
Many manufacturers market certain automatic and CVT gearboxes as having sealed, lifetime fluid. In practice, “lifetime” often means the life of the warranty under ideal conditions — not the life of the car in UAE traffic and heat. Independent technicians generally recommend changing this fluid around the 60,000 to 80,000 km mark regardless of what the sticker says, since fresh fluid is far cheaper than a rebuilt gearbox.
Signs your fluid is overdue
- Fluid that looks dark brown or black instead of red or pink
- A burnt smell when checking the dipstick
- Rougher or delayed gear shifts
- Slight slipping under acceleration
Any of these mean it’s time to have the fluid checked, even if you’re not yet at your usual mileage.
The cost of skipping it
A transmission fluid change is one of the more affordable services on a car. Ignoring it and letting the fluid break down is what leads to slipping, overheating, and eventually repairs that cost many times more than routine maintenance would have.
