4. Connect the black (negative) clamp to the negative terminal of the donor battery.
5. Connect the final black (negative) clamp to an unpainted metal point on the flat car’s engine bay — never directly to the negative terminal of the dead battery, since this is where sparks are most likely to ignite battery gases.

Let it charge before you start the engine

With the cables connected, start the donor vehicle and let it run for five to ten minutes. This gives the flat battery a real charge rather than just enough to limp through a single start. If you’re in a hurry, even two or three minutes helps more than jumping straight to starting the engine.

Disconnecting safely

Reverse the exact order: remove the negative clamp from the chassis first, then the negative clamp from the donor battery, then both positive clamps. Keep the clamps from touching each other or any metal surface while you coil the cables away.

When cables aren’t enough

If the battery won’t hold any charge at all, or drains again within a day, jumper cables are only masking a battery that’s reached the end of its life. Repeated charging attempts on a failing battery won’t fix the underlying problem.
