How to Check Engine Oil Level Without a Mechanic

You don’t need any mechanical experience to check your own oil level — just a clean cloth, five minutes, and a bit of confidence. Knowing how to check engine oil level yourself means you’ll catch a low reading long before it becomes a warning light on the dashboard. Here’s the whole process, step by step.

What you’ll need

• A paper towel or lint-free cloth
• Flat, level ground to park on
• Your car’s engine cooled down for a few minutes (not driven immediately before)

That’s it — no tools required.

Step-by-step

1. Park on level ground and switch off the engine. If you’ve just been driving, wait 5-10 minutes so oil that’s still circulating can settle back into the pan.
2. Open the bonnet and find the release latch — usually inside the car near the driver’s footwell, plus a secondary catch under the bonnet itself.
3. Locate the dipstick. It has a brightly coloured loop handle, often yellow or orange, and sits near the front or side of the engine.
4. Pull it out and wipe it clean with your cloth so you get an accurate reading, not a residual smear from before.
5. Reinsert it fully, pushing it all the way down into its tube.
6. Pull it out again and hold it horizontally to read the oil mark without it running.
7. Check where the oil sits against the two markers on the stick — labelled MIN/MAX, or shown as two dots or a crosshatched zone.

Reading the result

• Oil between the two marks: you’re good to go.
• Oil at or near the minimum mark: top up with the oil type recommended in your manual, a little at a time, rechecking as you go.
• Oil above the maximum mark: this can cause foaming and pressure issues — best to have the excess drained rather than driving on it.

A few extra checks while you’re there

While the dipstick’s out, glance at the oil colour and texture. It should be smooth and amber-to-brown. Gritty, sludgy, or milky oil is worth mentioning to a mechanic even if the level itself looks fine.

Make it a habit
