How to Check Transmission Fluid

Most drivers check their engine oil without a second thought but never look at transmission fluid until something feels wrong. A clean rag, good lighting, and a warm engine. Transmission fluid should be checked with the engine running and at normal operating temperature on most older automatic vehicles, though many newer cars use sealed systems with no dipstick at all — more on that below.

Step-by-step for cars with a dipstick

1. Park on level ground and leave the engine idling in Park (automatic) or Neutral with the handbrake on (manual, where applicable).
2. Locate the transmission dipstick. It’s usually near the back of the engine bay, separate from the engine oil dipstick, and often has a red or yellow handle.
3. Pull it out, wipe it clean, then reinsert it fully and pull it out again.
4. Check the level against the markings — it should sit between the “Full” and “Add” lines when the engine is warm.
5. Check the colour and smell. Healthy fluid is usually red or pink and smells faintly sweet. Dark brown, black, or burnt-smelling fluid is a sign it needs changing.

If your car doesn’t have a dipstick

Many modern automatics, especially CVTs and dual-clutch gearboxes, use sealed transmissions with no owner-accessible dipstick. This isn’t a fault — it’s by design, meant to keep the fluid clean over its service life. On these cars, fluid level and condition can only be checked properly by a technician using the correct tools and a diagnostic port.

What low or dirty fluid means

Low fluid usually points to a leak somewhere in the system — a worn seal, a loose pan bolt, or a failing gasket. Dirty or burnt fluid means the transmission has been running hotter than it should, which accelerates wear on internal components. Neither should be ignored, since transmission repairs are far more expensive than routine fluid maintenance.
