How to Check Your Engine Oil the Right Way

Most drivers only think about their oil when the dashboard light comes on. But a proper check takes five minutes and tells you far more than a warning light ever will — level, condition, and early signs of trouble. Here’s how to check engine oil the right way, every time.

Park on level ground and give it time

Always check on flat ground, not on a slope or driveway with a camber. If you’ve just been driving, wait 5-10 minutes after switching off. This lets the oil drain back down into the sump, so your reading is accurate rather than artificially low.

Some manufacturers recommend checking with a cold engine before your first drive of the day; others say a warm engine after a short rest is fine. Either works — the key is consistency and letting the oil settle.

Pull the dipstick and read it properly

1. Open the bonnet and locate the dipstick — usually a brightly coloured (often yellow or orange) handle.
2. Pull it out fully and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
3. Push it all the way back in, then pull it out again to take your reading.
4. Look at where the oil film sits between the two markers — “MIN” and “MAX,” or two dimples/crosshatched sections.

You want the oil sitting between the two marks, ideally closer to the top. If it’s at or below the minimum, top up before driving further.

Check the condition, not just the level

The level only tells half the story. While the dipstick is out, look closely at the oil itself:

• Colour — fresh oil is amber to light brown. Dark brown to black is normal as oil ages, but very dark, gritty oil signals it’s overdue for a change.
• Texture — rub a little between your fingers. It should feel smooth, not gritty or sludgy.
• Milky or frothy oil — this is a red flag. It usually means coolant is mixing with the oil, often from a failing head gasket, and needs attention immediately.
• Smell — a strong burnt smell can point to overheating or oil breaking down under high engine temperatures.

Why this matters more in Sharjah

Gulf heat accelerates oil breakdown, and dusty conditions mean oil picks up contaminants faster than in milder climates. A car that’s fine on a 10,000 km schedule elsewhere may need attention sooner here. Checking monthly — and always before a long drive — catches problems while they’re still cheap to fix.
