How to Cool Down an Overheated Engine Safely

If your temperature gauge suddenly climbs into the red on a Sharjah road, what you do in the next few minutes matters. Handled correctly, an overheating scare is a minor inconvenience. Handled wrong, it can turn into a cracked head gasket or a warped cylinder head. Here’s how to stop your car from overheating safely, step by step.

1. Switch off the AC, turn on the heater

As soon as you notice the gauge climbing, turn off the air conditioning and turn the heater on full, even in summer heat. The heater core pulls warmth out of the engine’s coolant loop and into the cabin, giving the engine some relief while you find somewhere to stop.

2. Pull over as soon as it’s safe

Find a safe spot to stop — a petrol station, shaded area, or hard shoulder. Don’t try to “push through” to your destination. Continuing to drive an overheating engine is the single biggest cause of serious, expensive damage in these situations.

3. Turn off the engine

Once stopped, switch the engine off completely. Running it further, even at idle, keeps generating heat that the cooling system is already failing to manage.

4. Do not open the bonnet or radiator cap right away

This is the step people get wrong most often. A hot radiator is under pressure, and opening the cap can release scalding steam and coolant with real force. Leave the bonnet closed for at least 15-20 minutes to let temperatures drop.

5. Open the bonnet carefully once it’s cooled

After waiting, open the bonnet from a safe distance and check for obvious issues — a burst hose, visible coolant leak, or steam still escaping. If you see active steam or hissing, wait longer.

6. Check the coolant level — carefully

Only touch the radiator cap once the engine is properly cool, and even then, cover it with a thick cloth and turn slowly to release any remaining pressure gradually. If the coolant reservoir is empty or very low, that’s likely your cause.

7. Add coolant only if you have it, and only a temporary top-up

If you’re carrying coolant (or plain water in an emergency), add it slowly once the system is cool. This is a temporary measure to get you to a workshop safely — not a fix for whatever caused the leak in the first place.

8. Get it inspected before driving normally again

Even if the temperature drops back to normal, don’t assume the problem is solved. A hose leak, failing water pump, or stuck thermostat will likely cause it to happen again, and repeated overheating causes cumulative engine damage.

When to call for a tow instead

If the engine won’t cool down after 30+ minutes, if you can’t find the source of a leak, or if you heard a bang or saw a sudden coolant loss, don’t attempt to drive it — even a short distance. Call for a tow.
