How to Jump Start a Car Safely

A flat battery has a habit of showing up at the worst possible moment — a hot car park, a work morning, or a driveway in Muwaileh with nowhere else to be. Knowing how to jump start a car properly means you can get back on the road in minutes, as long as you follow the right order and take a few sensible precautions.

What you’ll need

A set of jumper cables and a second, running vehicle with a healthy battery — or a portable jump-start pack if you have one. Make sure both vehicles are turned off before you begin, and park them close enough that the cables can reach without stretching, but without the cars touching.

Step 1: Check both batteries first

Make sure the flat battery isn’t leaking, cracked, or swollen. If it looks physically damaged, don’t attempt to jump it — call for professional help instead, since a damaged battery can be dangerous under load.

Step 2: Connect the cables in the right order

This is where most mistakes happen, and getting the sequence wrong risks sparks or damage to the electrical system.

1. Red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
2. Red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
3. Black clamp to the negative (–) terminal of the working battery.
4. Black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car’s engine block or chassis — not the negative terminal itself. This earths the circuit safely and reduces the risk of sparking near the battery.

Step 3: Start the working vehicle

Let it run for a couple of minutes to send some charge into the flat battery before you attempt to start the other car.

Step 4: Start the dead vehicle

Try starting the car with the flat battery. If it doesn’t fire on the first attempt, wait a minute and try again rather than cranking repeatedly, which can strain the starter motor.

Step 5: Remove the cables in reverse order

Once the flat car is running, disconnect the cables in the exact reverse sequence: black from the chassis, black from the working battery, red from the working battery, and finally red from the previously dead battery.

Step 6: Keep the engine running

Don’t switch the car off again straight away. Drive it for at least twenty to thirty minutes, or let it idle, so the alternator can rebuild some charge in the battery.

If it happens again soon

A car that needed jumping once might just have been drained by lights left on or a long idle period. But if it won’t hold charge and needs jumping again within days, the battery itself is likely failing and a jump start is only a temporary fix.
