How to Remove Scratches From Your Car (DIY vs Professional)

Not every scratch needs a trip to the workshop, but plenty of drivers waste a weekend trying to buff out damage that was never going to come out with a polishing kit. Knowing how to remove scratches from your car properly starts with figuring out how deep the damage actually goes.

The fingernail test

Run your fingernail gently across the scratch. If your nail catches or drags in the groove, the scratch has gone through the clear coat and likely into the paint or primer. If your nail glides over it smoothly, it’s probably just in the clear coat — and that’s the kind you can often handle yourself.

When DIY works

Light surface scratches that only affect the clear coat can usually be improved with a good quality scratch remover compound and a microfiber cloth or dual-action polisher. Work in small sections, follow the product instructions on pressure and timing, and don’t over-polish one spot — it’s possible to burn through the clear coat with too much heat and friction. This works well for swirl marks, light washing scratches, and shallow scuffs from parking mishaps.

When you need a professional

• The scratch reaches bare metal or primer. You’ll see grey primer or bare metal colour in the groove — DIY compounds can’t fix this, and leaving it exposed invites rust, especially with UAE humidity near the coast.
• The scratch is long or across a body line. Blending paint correctly around curves and character lines takes a spray gun and experience, not a touch-up pen.
• There are multiple scratches or a scuffed panel. At that point, respraying the panel properly gives a far better and more even result than spot-treating each mark.
• The paint colour is metallic or pearl. These finishes are much harder to touch up convincingly by hand — mismatched sheen or colour is more noticeable than the original scratch.

Why leaving deep scratches is a bad idea

A scratch that’s reached bare metal isn’t just cosmetic. Once metal is exposed, it starts oxidising, and rust can spread underneath the surrounding paint before it’s even visible from outside. What starts as a AED 200 fix can turn into a full panel repair if left too long.
