Signs of an Engine Oil Leak (and What Causes It)

A dark patch on your parking spot is easy to ignore — until the oil light comes on or the engine starts running rough. Oil leaks rarely fix themselves, and in Sharjah’s heat, low oil levels put extra strain on an engine that’s already working hard. Here’s what causes an engine oil leak and how to spot one early.

1. Worn gaskets and seals

Rubber and cork gaskets — around the valve cover, oil pan, and crankshaft seals — harden and shrink with age and heat exposure. Once they lose their seal, oil slowly weeps out, usually leaving light staining before it becomes a visible drip. This is the most common cause of oil leak we see, especially on cars over five years old.

2. A loose or damaged oil filter

If the oil filter wasn’t tightened properly during a service, or its rubber gasket is damaged, oil can seep out around the filter housing. This usually shows up soon after an oil change, which makes it easy to trace back to the source.

3. A damaged drain plug or stripped threads

A drain plug that’s over-tightened, cross-threaded, or fitted with a worn washer won’t seal properly. Over time this can also strip the threads in the oil pan itself, turning a simple fix into a bigger repair.

4. A cracked or corroded oil pan

Speed bumps, potholes, and low ground clearance can all take a toll on the oil pan sitting beneath the engine. A hard knock can dent or crack it, while age and road salt exposure can cause corrosion that eventually leaks.

5. Excess engine pressure

A clogged PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve builds up pressure inside the engine that has nowhere to go. That pressure pushes oil out through the weakest point — usually a gasket or seal — even if those parts aren’t damaged.

Signs to watch for

  • Spots or puddles under the car after it’s been parked
  • A burning oil smell, especially after driving
  • Blue-tinged smoke from the engine bay
  • The oil level dropping between services
  • A dashboard oil pressure warning

What to do next

A small leak left unchecked becomes a bigger repair, and running low on oil accelerates engine wear fast — something you really can’t afford in constant Sharjah heat and traffic. If you’ve noticed spots, a smell, or a dropping level, don’t wait for the warning light.
