What to Do If Your Brakes Fail While Driving

1. Don’t panic and don’t slam the pedal repeatedly

Take your foot off the accelerator immediately. If you have ABS, press the brake pedal firmly and hold it rather than pumping it rapidly, modern anti-lock systems are designed for firm, sustained pressure. Pumping was older advice for non-ABS cars and can work against you in a modern vehicle.

2. Shift into a lower gear

In an automatic, manually shift down through the gears (or use low/manual mode if available) to use engine braking to slow the car. This won’t stop you outright, but it reduces speed significantly without relying on the brake system at all.

3. Use the parking brake gradually

The parking or emergency brake operates on a separate mechanical system from your main brakes. Apply it steadily and firmly rather than yanking it hard, a sudden full application at speed can lock the rear wheels and cause a skid. Gradual, increasing pressure is safer and still effective.

4. Warn other drivers

Turn on your hazard lights as soon as you realize something’s wrong. This gives other drivers time to react and gives you space to slow down safely without someone following too closely.

5. Look for a safe way to lose speed

Scan for a runoff area, an uphill slope, a wide shoulder, or an open lane with no traffic. An upward incline is especially useful since gravity helps slow you down. Avoid steering into anything that could cause a more severe impact just to stop faster.

6. Get off the road safely and stop the engine

Once you’ve slowed enough, steer to the shoulder or a safe stopping point, put the car in park, and turn off the engine. Don’t attempt to keep driving even at low speed, get the car properly inspected before it moves again.
