Wheel Alignment vs Wheel Balancing: What's the Difference?

Customers often ask for a wheel alignment when what they actually need is wheel balancing, or the other way around. The two services sound similar and are sometimes done in the same visit, but they fix completely different problems. Understanding the difference helps you describe the symptom correctly and avoid paying for a service that won’t solve it.

What wheel alignment does

Wheel alignment adjusts the angles of your wheels relative to each other and to the road, based on the manufacturer’s specifications. Technicians check three main measurements — camber, caster and toe — and correct them using adjustments in the suspension and steering components.

Misalignment usually happens gradually from normal driving, or suddenly after hitting a pothole or a kerb. Signs you need it include:

  • The car pulling to one side even on a flat, straight road
  • The steering wheel sitting crooked when driving straight
  • Uneven tyre wear, especially on the inner or outer edges
  • Vague or wandering steering feel at highway speed

What wheel balancing does

Wheel balancing corrects a different issue — tiny weight imbalances in the tyre and wheel assembly itself. Every tyre has minor manufacturing variances in weight distribution, and balancing adds small weights to the rim to even it out. This is done on a balancing machine that spins the wheel and calculates exactly where and how much weight is needed.

An out-of-balance wheel typically causes:

  • Vibration in the steering wheel at certain speeds, often 80-120 km/h
  • A shaking or buzzing feeling through the seat or floor
  • Faster, patchy tyre wear if left uncorrected

Why the confusion happens

Both problems can make a car feel “off” on the road, and both involve the wheels, so it’s easy to mix them up. Wheel balancing is usually the fix when the issue is speed-dependent vibration. Alignment is the fix when the issue is pulling, drifting or a crooked steering wheel. Some cars need both — new tyres are typically balanced when fitted, and alignment is checked separately as part of a full service.

When to get each one done

Get a wheel alignment after hitting a significant pothole or kerb, after a suspension repair, or if you notice uneven tyre wear. Get a wheel balancing check if you feel vibration that changes with speed, or whenever you fit new tyres. As a general rule, check alignment every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first.
