When Should You Replace Brake Pads?

Brake pads are a wear item by design, they’re meant to slowly sacrifice themselves so your discs don’t get damaged. The tricky part is knowing when to change car brake pads before they wear down too far. Here’s what to watch for.

1. A high-pitched squeal

Most pads have a small built-in metal indicator that’s designed to squeal against the disc once the friction material gets thin. It’s not subtle, and it’s meant to get your attention. Hearing it consistently means it’s time to book a check.

2. A deep grinding sound

If you hear metal grinding on metal rather than a squeal, the pad material is likely gone completely and the backing plate is now contacting the disc directly. This causes real damage to the disc and should be addressed immediately, not scheduled for later.

3. Longer stopping distances

Worn pads have less friction material to grip the disc, so it takes more pedal travel and more distance to stop the same way you used to. If stopping feels less immediate than it did a few months ago, pad wear is a likely cause.

4. A pedal that feels different

A pedal that sinks lower before engaging, or feels spongy compared to normal, can indicate thin pads in combination with other wear. It’s worth mentioning this specifically when you bring the car in, since it helps narrow down the cause.

5. Visible thickness

If you can see the wheel through the spokes, look at the pad pressed against the disc. Less than about 3mm of visible pad material is generally the point where replacement should happen soon, though this varies by pad type.

6. Mileage as a rough guide

Pads typically last somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000 km, though this varies hugely based on driving style, traffic conditions, and whether you drive mostly city or highway. Frequent stop-start driving in Sharjah traffic wears pads faster than steady highway cruising.
