Why Do Tyres Wear Unevenly?

Run your hand across a worn tyre and you can often tell what’s wrong with your car before a mechanic even looks at it. Uneven wear isn’t random — each pattern points to a specific mechanical cause. Understanding what’s behind poor car alignment or other issues can save you from replacing tyres over and over for the same unresolved problem.

Wear on the outer edges

If both edges of the tread are worn but the centre looks fine, the tyre has likely been under-inflated for an extended period. Low pressure lets the tyre bulge slightly, putting more contact and wear on the edges. Check pressure against the manufacturer’s recommendation and monitor for a slow leak if it keeps dropping.

Wear in the centre only

The opposite pattern — a worn centre strip with healthier edges — usually means over-inflation. The tyre bulges outward in the middle, concentrating wear there and reducing the contact patch that actually grips the road.

Wear on just one edge

This is a strong sign of a camber alignment problem — the wheel is tilted in or out from vertical more than it should be. It can result from worn suspension components, a bent control arm, or simply alignment drifting out of spec over time. This pattern needs a proper alignment check rather than a pressure adjustment.

Feathered or diagonal wear

If the tread blocks feel sharp on one side and smooth on the other when you run your hand across them, that’s feathering — a classic sign of incorrect toe alignment. It often comes with a slight pulling sensation while driving and gets worse quickly if ignored.

Cupping or scalloped wear

Small, evenly spaced dips around the tread usually point to a suspension issue — worn shock absorbers or struts failing to control the tyre’s bounce properly. This pattern often comes with a bouncy or less controlled ride, particularly over bumps.

Wear on only one tyre, not the others

If a single tyre is wearing much faster than the rest, suspect either a localised suspension fault on that corner, a persistent slow puncture affecting pressure, or a wheel that’s out of balance and vibrating against the road surface.

Why catching this early matters

Uneven wear isn’t just cosmetic — it reduces grip, increases stopping distances, and eventually forces early replacement of tyres that would otherwise have thousands of kilometres left. The underlying cause, whether it’s pressure, alignment or suspension, usually gets worse the longer it’s left.
