Why Does My Car Battery Keep Dying?

A single flat battery can happen to anyone. A battery that keeps going flat, week after week, means something is actively working against it. Before you buy another replacement, it’s worth understanding what’s really draining it.

A parasitic draw

Even with the engine off, your car pulls a small amount of power to run the alarm, clock, and computer memory. A faulty component, aftermarket installation, or a light left half-on can turn that small draw into a battery killer overnight. This is one of the most common reasons a battery that tested fine keeps dying anyway.

A weak or failing alternator

The alternator recharges the battery while you drive. If it’s underperforming, your battery never gets topped back up, so it starts each trip a little weaker than the last. This pattern is a strong clue if the battery drains even though you’re driving regularly.

Short trips that never fully recharge

Starting the engine uses a large burst of battery power, and it takes a decent length of driving to replace it. Heat and battery age

How to extend car battery life

A few habits go a long way toward avoiding repeat jump starts:

• Turn off lights, AC, and accessories before switching off the engine
• Drive at least once every few days, ideally for 20 minutes or more
• Keep terminals clean and tight
• Have the battery and alternator load-tested once a year, especially before summer
