A check engine light that comes on, then disappears a day or two later, confuses more drivers than one that just stays on. It feels like the problem fixed itself. It didn’t — the light going off doesn’t mean the fault is gone, and ignoring it is one of the more common mistakes we see.

Your car’s computer runs continuous checks on emissions and engine systems. When it detects a fault, it lights the warning and stores a code. If the same fault doesn’t reappear over the next several drive cycles, the system considers it resolved and switches the light off automatically — even though the underlying cause may still be there, just not triggering the exact same conditions.

Common reasons a fault comes and goes

• A loose fuel cap. One of the most frequent causes of an intermittent light. It seals well enough some of the time and leaks vapour the rest.
• A marginal sensor. A sensor that’s failing but not yet dead can send bad readings only when it heats up, vibrates a certain way, or during specific driving conditions.
• A loose or corroding connector. Vibration on Sharjah’s roads can shift a connector just enough to break contact intermittently.
• A vacuum leak that varies with temperature. Rubber hoses expand and contract with heat, so a small crack may only leak under certain conditions.
